Today’s link: “And we shall call this ‘Moff’s Law.’”

When did critical thinking become so uncool? I know when. When people decided that others’ criticism of content somehow bars them from enjoying it. For the record, it is possible to like problematic things without flat-out ignoring those problematic aspects. I know this because everything I like is problematic. Everything! Even those supposedly progressive TV shows, movies, and books. All of it. The sooner you can accept this, the better off you’ll be.

From the post:

"So when you go out of your way to suggest that people should be thinking less — that not using one’s capacity for reason is an admirable position to take, and one that should be actively advocated — you are not saying anything particularly intelligent. And unless you live on a parallel version of Earth where too many people are thinking too deeply and critically about the world around them and what’s going on in their own heads, you’re not helping anything; on the contrary, you’re acting as an advocate for entropy.”

The reason people point out these things — racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc., — is not just because these things are bad. It’s because the things we see on TV, in movies, and read in books all play huge parts in what is normalized in our society. It’s not something to glaze over and ignore when it adversely affects people who are already marginalized not just in their media representation, but in their day-to-day lives. It bothers me. It affects me. I’m going to talk about it. If my talking about it bothers you, good news — you can ignore it, because it truly has nothing to do with you.
